Modify it, change it, colorize it — do what you like, but keep the copyright information in the footer intact. Other than that — enjoy!

PS! An extended commercial version of WP NewsMag, called WP NewsMag Plus, will be available soon. Keep yourself updated through our RSS feeds.

A Few Words About WP NewsMag

You do not have to use any plugins in order to get WP NewsMag up and running. On the other hand, you may want to enhance the theme further by the use of plugins. Feel free to experiment.

Features

WP NewsMag is not just another WordPress theme — it´s more to it than meet the eye. Read here:

Fully widgetized with five custom sidebars

100% CSS — easy to customize the look and feel to suite your needs

Hybrid blog/portfolio/photo/magazine style theme

5 different front page category loops

Slider function for bottombar and featured articles

Three level CSS/JS dropdown menu

Utilization of Custom Fields for neat image display on the front page

Built in image transparency for linked images

Lot more…

Enjoy!

Installation

1. Get yourself a copy of WordPress 2.5.1 (or later) and install it.

2. Change the category id:s for the front page to reflect your categories (it´s done in the index-php file).

You´re finished.

Using Custom Fields

For the front page loop images in the five featured sections (categories) WP NewsMag uses Custom Fields. The key should be set to “Image” (without the citation characters and with a capital “I”) for the larger images and “Small” for the smaller images and the value is simply the name of your image.

Like this: Key: Image and Value: name-of-image.jpg. (Key: “Small” for the smaller ones.)

The pictures should be uploaded to the folder “featured” in the WP NewsMag template folder. If you want your images elsewhere you need to change the paths in each of the five featured boxes in the index.php file. Find this:

bloginfo(’template_url’); ?>/featured/

and change to whatever place you like on your server.

Different browsers

The WP NewsMag theme has been developed for Firefox. It should work just fine on Opera, Netscape and Safari. Explorer has no known issues so the theme should work just fine even on IE 6. But, feel free to report bugs as well as solutions here. Creds will go into the stylesheet file.

Good luck and enjoy!

Demo & Download

Download WP NewsMag here | Demo WP NewsMag here

Changelog

June 2, 2008: Uploaded the WP NewsMag V1.0 theme to the server.

Bugs

None reported thus far.

Other Stuff

Please comment on all issues concerning WP NewsMag here.

If you choose to use the WP NewsMag theme in any shape or form, let me know and I´ll post a link to it on the WP NewsMag page.

Need More?

There will soon be a commercial heavily extended version of WP NewsMag available. The price tag? $79 flat. Keep yourself informed through our RSS Feed.

Creating a Featured Articles section for your WordPress blog involves 3 basic steps:

Create a new category called Featured.

Place the code (provided below) into sidebar.php.

Style the Featured section to match the rest of your sidebar.

Featured Articles code

Place the following code in the preferred location of your sidebar—or anywhere else you may want to display your Featured Articles:

  <?php query_posts('category_name=Featured&showposts=5'); while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

      <a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark"><?php the_title(); ?>

  <?php endwhile; ?>

Code explained

The query_posts function queries the database for all posts in the Featured category and selects the 5 latest posts. Change the 5 to whatever number you want.

query_posts('category_name=Featured&showposts=5');

This portion displays the 5 selected posts, in list format, via Post Title:

<a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”bookmark”><?php the_title(); ?>

Styling your Featured Articles section

Enclose your Featured Articles section in a DIV

and define it in your style sheet.

#featured ul li a, #featured ul li a:visited {
/* preferred styling here */
}

#featured ul li a:hover {
/* preferred styling here */
}

Now, posts in the Featured category will be displayed in the Featured section.

This process can be applied to any section you may wish to create, anywhere on your blog. If you don’t have a Featured Articles/Posts section yet, give it a try.

Do you have any other ideas where this might be useful? Or maybe you’ve done this already to create a unique section on your blog? Tell us about it.
